  • The Kiowa County Mavericks won in their fourth straight week against the Fairfield Falcons 50-36 on a damp foggy night in Langdon.
Fairfield, who entered the game with a 5-and-1 record on the season, was a great test for the Mavericks, who have shown considerable overall improvement over the past three weeks.
While #8 Trever Powell and #24 Creighton McDonald have solidified the offense, questions about the defense remain even as the season reaches it crescendo.
Powell and McDonald didn't disappoint, rushing for 463 combined yards with 4 touchdowns, despite the slick gridiron.
Number 22 Keenan Behee, the biggest little Mav in burn orange, had his best game of the season rushing for 131 yards with a pair of touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Behee has been used sparingly thus far in the season leaving some fans scratching their heads as to why we haven't seen more of him. You have to wonder if Mavericks Head Coach Clint Young has been keeping Behee in his back pocket for just such a game.
But the big story was the Mavericks defense in the first half.
The Falcons offense was well overmatched for the first 24 minutes of the game, with the Mavericks linemen pressuring QB #23 Ryan Ewy and keeping high traffic lanes congested on key downs.
A pair of turnover-on-downs in their own red zone were highlights in a best-of-season performance from #51 Rustin Ardery, #50 Eric Torres, #58 Aaron Heft, #40 John Terhune, #21 Evan Jacks, #20 Paul Negrete and #11 Payton Miller.
The defense wasn't able to duplicate their performance in the second half, resulting in a few nail-biting moments. You could almost feel the collective Kiowa County rousers calculating scores and determining possibilities as the Falcons matched the Mavs, scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter.
The Mavericks will face the Attica Bulldogs in Greensburg next Friday.
