On Monday night Mayor Bob Dixson asked the city council to cast a vote approving his choice for the new municipal judge.
Dixson will appoint Hon. Michael A. Freelove to fill the municipal judgeship vacated earlier this year by his wife and Kansas 16th Judicial District Magistrate Judge Hon. Ann L. Dixson.
Freelove is also a magistrate judge for the 16th Kansas District, representing Clark County.
In early 2011 Freelove launched an unsuccessful campaign to fill the vacant 115th District Kansas House of Representatives seat that was left open when primary winner Garrett Love sought nomination for Tim Huelskamp’s vacated 38th Kansas Senate District.
In an election Q&A with Dodge City Daily Globe reporter Mark Reagan, Freelove discussed his credentials.
“I’ve spent approximately 25 years working with the district magistrate judge’s legislative committee,” said Freelove in the interview. “From 30 years of being a judge, I have learned decision-making. I’ve had to make some tough decisions, whether they were popular or not.”
The council voted unanimously to approve the appointment.
