  • Young says new team, defense is focus

  • As the days get longer and the opening school bells echo across harvested corn fields, Maverick Football fans are pulling their burnt orange hoodies out of the closet, dusting off their foam fingers and looking forward to the 2012-2013 season. With a sub .500 season in the rearview and an exodus of some top players from last season, the Mavericks are looking for a new identity.
“I think we really want to learn from our mistakes,” said Maverick Football Head Coach Clint Young. “I think we’re going to be a lot more defensive minded. Our goals are going to revolve around the defensive side of the ball. We’re going to let the offense take care of itself and hopefully score some points here and there.  Really, we want to be more solid on the defensive side.”
Defensive heavies Jordan Wyrick, Montana Ralstin, Dillon Crumpler and Lymon Moorehead have all graduated, leaving questions about the defensive and offensive lines.
Young didn’t talk specifics, but made clear that the defense, while a focus, was still a question mark.
“We don’t know [our strategy] yet,” said Young. “We’ve not come to a conclusion of what type of defense we are going to have. We’re looking at three different types of defense, we have the personnel to run at least three different types of defense and run them well. We are looking at our reads and trying to figure out what gives us the best chance to have the toughest defense we can.”
With the graduation of senior quarterback Ross Binford, the Mavericks have lost their top offensive player from the previous two seasons.
Binford rushed for a combined 4,381 yards (2,334 yards in 2010-2011 and 2,047 in 2011-2012) during his junior and senior year. He also threw for a combined 1,076 yards, averaging nearly 100 yards per game during the 2010-2011 season.
Trever Powell, who will enter this season as a junior, has been near the top in offensive production the past two years. Last year Powell produced the lion’s share of offense down the stretch for the Mavericks, following Binford’s season-ending foot injury.
Hehas combined for 1,089 yards rushing during his freshman and sophomore years, jumping from a 104-yard season in 2010-2011, to a 985-yard season in 2011-2012.
Powell is a team favorite to lead in most if not all of the offensive categories at seasons end, barring injury.
“I don’t think we’re trying to fill those voids,” said Young when asked about the exodus of last year’s seniors. “I don’t think you try to replace Jordan [Wyrick], Montana [Ralstin] or Ross [Binford]. I think these kids take their positions and take their team and make it their own. We’re not going to have another Ross and we don’t want to try to make these kids into him. We want them to be their own players. It’s not fair to them to try to fill those shoes. There is no pressure [from the coaching staff] in regards to that. We’re trying to make a new team. This year’s team is going to be different from last year’s team.”
