  • The Kiowa County Mavericks offense exploded last Friday against the South Gray Rebels.
Coming off of their 40-20 loss against the Minneola Wildcats in their season opener last week, the Mavs wanted to bounce back going into Friday’s conference game in Montezuma.
“I felt like [our first game] was promising,” said Head Coach Clint Young in last week’s Game Night Magazine. “We went through it as a team and we saw a lot of places to improve. What we saw [tells us] that success isn’t that far away.”
If Friday’s game was any indication, you can check the crystal ball and turban off of coach Young’s Christmas list, as the offense and defense delivered big in the 40-14 blowout win against the rival Rebels helmed by former Haviland Dragon’s coach Jeff Blattner.
The burnt orange and white offense must have looked like a blurry creamsicle to the Rebels as #8 Trever Powell ran through their Swiss cheese defense en route to a 210-yard performance that included a 74-yard kick off return TD and a team-leading 12 tackles.
Powell must be warming up as he rushed only 55 yards in week one, good for second behind #24 Creighton McDonald and was stymied behind the Mavs’ still-searching defense.
McDonald played third fiddle offense against South Gray with a 30-yard performance, just behind the 48-yard performance of #18 Trevor Tyree, who also threw for 27 yards, including a 11-yard bomb to Powell and a 16-yard lob to #88 Tucker McKinney.
The Mavericks offense found success despite the 28 combined tackles from Rebel bigs #8 Colton Dirks, #10 Skidmore Carson and #9 Gabriel Loya.
McDonald was also a key component of a Mavericks defense that limited the Rebels to only 2 bookend TD in the first and four quarters. The 32 combined tackles were spread out amongst the Mavs line with #50 Erik Torres (6), McDonald (5)and #20 Paul Negrete (2) all contributing.
The Mavericks will take on the Macksville Mustangs on Friday Sept. 14 in Greensburg, following homecoming ceremonies. Read a preview of Friday’s game in this week’s Game Night Magazine.
