  • Locals find success at Sunflower State Games
  • Leavenworth native Brandon Dougherty and Mutual Savings loan officer Dru Wheatcroft participated in the Sunflower State Games July 28-29 in Topeka.

Their team, the Seasoned Boars, won the 19-and-over men's five-on-five open basketball division. Wheatcroft and the Seasoned Boars have been participating in the annual event for the past 13 years, but this was the first year that Dougherty played with them.

It is the second time in the last three years the Boars have won the event.

The team is now qualified to participate in the America's State Games, which will be held in Hershey, Pa., later this year.

Dougherty just finished his career earlier this year at the University of Saint Mary's and Wheatcroft played for two years at Emporia State University before finishing his career at John Brown University in Arkansas in 2002.

Besides Dougherty and Wheatcroft, other players on the team included:
    Chris Zerbe, University of Kansas
    Schyler Thomas, Kansas State University
    Kelvin Parker, Northwest Missouri State
Dane Brumagin, University of Missouri-Kansas City
    Esian Henderson, Central Missouri State
    Martel Mahon, SIU-Edwardsville
    Nick Biby, Rockhurst
