Exodus 20:3-4: “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.”

Exodus 20:3-4: "You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below."

Proverbs 3:5-6: " Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

As I write this article I do it knowing some will become rather upset with the stand I take; however, I write knowing that one day I will stand before the judgment seat of our mighty God and I might well be ask, "Did you take a stand for me?" I want to be able to say "yes" and hear those words of Jesus, "well done good and faithful servant."

Our nation has lost the God compass. In my reading of late I have been reminded that this great nation was founded on the principles of scripture and that a relationship with God was an important part of many of our founding fathers lives. Communities for years used the church and church activities as a gathering place. God was at the center of those activities and God was important to the people. Fast forward a few years when people had electricity and then televisions and the focus of people's lives changed. Entertainment became a big part of people's lives and because of that shift the entertainment industry is a multi-billion dollar business today. Entertainment has expanded to include all kinds of sports, which has pushed the entertainment industry into a big driver in our society. People will give hours, even days, to participating in or watching sporting events but they won't give an hour or two a week to God. When I think about colleges wanting to pay football players, and one NFL player making 100M over a five year period I have no doubt this nation has lost the God compass.

When I was in school there was no thought of kids playing sports before the 7th grade. Now we have kids playing in the 3rd and 4th grades and going to all kinds of camps in the summer. But most won't give time for a church camp that could impact their life for eternity. I have to ask myself for what purpose are we doing these things. Very few of the kids that play sports are going to go on to have a future playing a game. Oh, I know the importance of learning a sport and the discipline it will teach kids and help them with life experience. I also know those same things can be learned from the study of God's Word, attendance at Christian worship and events. I also know a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus will last for eternity and take them further than all the big incomes and treasures of this earth.

Matthew 6:19-20 says "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."

The world continues to push people away from a relationship with God and toward the things of the world. I recently read statistics from 2003 that stated of the 50 million teens in the U.S. 40 million did not know Christ as there savior. These same statistics showed that 80 million Americans do not read or even own a Bible. I believe it is time for the Christians to stand up and take back our nation for God. It is time for a call to action to take down the idols of this world and make God the center of our nation. It is time to put our trust in the One true God, to acknowledge Him and allow him to direct our paths. It all starts with a small spark. It can all start with one community saying it is time to turn our hearts toward God. I encourage you to put some real thought into what we are doing to our young people when we push them into the ways of the world and leave God out of the picture. I encourage you to pray about what God desires of His people. What he truly wants is a relationship with each person.
