  • A pair of men were arrested on July 11 in connection with the theft of a windmill trailer owned by Mullinville artist M.T. Liggett.
“This trailer was down in my pasture,” said Liggett. “One of them got it, hooked it up to a truck and left with it. And they left the gate open when there were cows in there, that’s dangerous because they were black cows too.”
Zachary Herr and Chad Johnson were arrested just past midnight by Kiowa County Sheriff’s Officer Chad Mull after Mull saw the two suspects detaching the trailer, a large iron windmill emblazoned with a swastika, from a pickup truck.
“That is an iron wheeled wagon, you can only go four or five miles per hour tops,” said Liggett. “It’s supposed to be pulled by a horse. They got down to the gas plant and the wheel fell off.”
Herr and Johnson appeared in Kiowa County District Court on July 12 and posted the $2,500 bond the same day.
Both Herr and Johnson are charged with theft of property with a value over $1,000 but under $25,000, criminal damage in excess of $1,000, theft of property under $1,000 and Trespassing. Johnson was also charged with transporting an open container.
They are both scheduled to appear on July 26 for their preliminary hearing.
“I don’t know why they stole it, but they don’t have very good sense. You can’t go down the highway with an iron wheeled wagon,” explained Liggett. “Now, I’ve got to repair it and balance it. I figure it’s going to take me about $1,000 to repair, which I may never do. I might just let her sit right there. I’m getting old, I can’t keep up this stuff.”
