A fire scorched an open pasture along a near-mile of the south side of U.S. 54/400 in Kiowa County this afternoon.
The fire broke out late in the afternoon on Wednesday as tempuratures skyrocketed, topping nearly 105 degrees in some parts of the county.
Kiowa County Fire crews were on site battling the blaze for more than four hours.
By 6 p.m. it appeared the fire had been contained, but not before spreading across a number of acres alongside the highway. Winds were blowing north and east for most of the afternoon.
County sheriff's halted east and west bound traffic at one point, as the fire burned up to, but did not cross the highway. The delay caused further traffic backups as KDOT construction has east and westbound traffic opn the east side of county limited to one lane for a 4-6 mile strecth between Haviland and Pratt.
Fire officials were not available to answer questions, but it did not appear the fire caused damage to any structures or homes.
Residents in Greensburg reported a 2-3 minute power outage in the afternoon, but it is unknown if it was related to the blaze.
Updates as they come in.
