Anxiety disorders affect about one in five American adults in a given year, causing them to feel fear and uncertainty, yet they are one of the most common – and most treatable - types of mental health problems.
Everyone feels anxious now and then, but there’s a big difference between everyday anxiety (such as speaking in public), and having an anxiety disorder. People with anxiety disorders feel overwhelming tension when there is no real danger and take extreme action to avoid the source of their anxiety. It can disrupt a person’s work, social and family life.
Anxiety disorders often occur along with other mental or physical illness, including alcohol or substance abuse, and may mask anxiety symptoms or make them worse. In some cases, these other illnesses need to be treated before a person will respond to treatment for anxiety disorder.
Anxiety disorders are usually very treatable, and can help most people lead productive, fulfilling lives. Anxiety disorders include:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) involves constant, out of proportion worry that the worst will happen. It will usually last for at least six weeks.
Simple Phobias, fears of specific objects/situations, i.e., flying, snakes/insects/ elevators/closed spaces or heights.
Social Phobias, unreasonable fears of meeting new people or public speaking.
Agoraphobia, the fear of places or situations that a person feels he/she won’t be able to
escape from, or, won’t go out alone or be inside a crowded building.
Overcome with feelings of terror when no threat exists, heart races/difficulty breathing.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a delayed reaction to a traumatic event - war
experience/car crash/ violent storm. One relives the event or always feels on edge.
Don’t ignore the symptoms of anxiety disorder. Seek help. The sooner a person gets treatment, the sooner he/she finds relief. You can contact Iroquois Center for educational materials about anxiety disorders.
