  • I read a story about a gentleman who had died.  He arrived at the pearly gates and St. Peter met him and said “We do things a little differently now.  You get to choose whether you want to spend eternity in heaven or hell.”
The gentleman responded, “That’s an easy decision.  I want to spend eternity in heaven.”
St. Peter said. “It isn’t that easy; you have to spend a day in each one first and then choose.”
The man said he could do that.  He was put on the elevator and sent to hell.  When he got off it was this fabulous place with many of his friends lounging around having a good time.  He visited and enjoyed a wonderful meal in the greatest restaurant he had ever been in and then he returned to heaven to spend a day.  He lounged around on the clouds and played the harp and enjoyed his time there, also.
St. Peter then came to him and asked if he had made his choice about where to spend eternity.
The gentleman answered, “This may sound kind of strange, but I am going to choose hell”.
St. Peter put him on the elevator and sent him back. When he got off it was the most desolate place he had ever seen and his friends were dressed in rags picking up trash.  He was soon put to work and when the devil came by the gentleman asked, “What had happened here; yesterday this was a wonderful place, now look at it.”
The devil responded, “Yesterday we were recruiting you, today you are staff.”
This is just a story and some will think it’s funny but there is truth within it.  First, we do get to choose where we spend eternity, but we have to do it before our death, not following it.  The sooner in life we make the choice to follow Jesus the sooner the Holy Spirit will begin to direct our path and we can reap abundant rewards here on earth.  The second fact in this story is that the devil does recruit.  1Peter 5:8 says “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”  The devil uses all facets of the world to ensnare us. He finds our weakest spots and hits us in those areas. When we are following the devil he doesn’t have to worry about us working for the Kingdom of God.
A portion of Joshua 24:15 says “Choose for yourselves this day, whom you will serve”.  That is a choice each of us has to make; no one else can make it for us.  I can tell you that my life is certainly different since I choose to follow the Lord.  At the end of this verse it says “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord”.  That is my choice and I pray if you haven’t made that choice that you will do so before it is too late.  Remember God loves you no matter what and is just waiting for you to call unto Him.
