  • The Lady Mavericks’ season ended Feb. 27 with a 38-46 loss to Sublette in the first round of the sub-state tournament. A team that struggled offensively and fought to pick up wins in the final few weeks of the season will return next year, nearly intact, to build on the 2011-2012 season highs and turn the page on the season lows.
“I think, overall the season went fairly well,” said Lady Mavericks Head Coach Randy Vandenhoek on Friday afternoon. “The win-loss record (7-12) was not what we’d hoped for. I always said going into the season that if we could finish with a .500 record we’d had a pretty good year. We finished a couple of games below that.”
The Mavs struggled early in the season losing their first three contests. Their first win of the season came at the Keady Classic Tournament on Dec. 10 in a 50-52 nail-biter against Macksville, a team that finished with a 1-20 record.
“It was definitely an offensive struggle all year long,” said Vandenhoek. “You can look at our stats and our shooting percentage from the field and the free throw line. Just, in general the offense was a struggle.”
But the win against Macksville started a three-game streak that put the team at .500 going into a Jan. 13 match against the Kinsley Coyotes at the Kiowa County High School gymnasium.
The 59-46 loss not only started a three-game losing streak, but Halie Headrick left mid-game with a season-ending injury, a torn ACL in her right knee.
“Halie was as vocal a leader as we had all season,” continued Vandenhoek. “So when she went down it took away not just her offensive contributions, but also her vocal leadership. Any time you lose a 9-point per game player, for us that’s huge. So to lose that offense, and Halie was probably out best outside shooter, was tough for us. It took us some games to adjust to the fact that she wasn’t on the floor.”
The Mavs never regained their footing. The Mavericks won 4-of-4 (.500) prior to the Kinsley game and had a .300 winning percentage after losing Headrick, although losing Headrick was a contributing factor, Vandenhoek said consistency was hard to come by.
“We couldn’t get any kind of a streak going. I think it was kind of frustrating to try to get the consistency we were after. We’d play well and then we wouldn’t play well. But I thought at sub-state we had a decent shot at winning one game, maybe two.”
The Mavs stumbled into the Sub-State Tournament having lost three of their last five and drew Sublette (a team that finished 11-11) in the opening round on Feb. 27.
“They were excited to play and I thought we played well,” added Vandenhoek. “We hurt ourselves missing shots at the free throw line. We had the chance to win the game.”
Page 2 of 3 - The Mavericks won the first half outscoring Sublette 22-17 in the opening quarters, but Sublette made adjustments and outscored the Mavs 29-16 in the second half finishing Kiowa County’s season with a 46-38 loss.
“It was frustrating at the end,” said Vandenhoek. “I thought we played really good basketball for two-and-a-half quarters, so that was encouraging as far as playing well at the end of the year. That is encouraging for next year because we will have basically the same team.”
Many of the Mavericks are expected to return for the 2012-2013 squad including Riann Heft, Halie Headrick, Angela and Dena Liggett, Heather Melton and Katelynn Gamble.
“By the end of the year we were finally at a competitive level, defensively,” explained Vandenhoek.  “We had some bright spots here-and-there over the course of the season, but towards the end I think we were really starting to get it figured out. There is some disappointment but they are a hard group to read. Some of them have already come to me asking what we can do over the summer and what we need to do to get better for next season.”
