Both of the boys and girls Mavericks Varsity basketball teams have been slotted for the upcoming Class 2A sub-state tournament in Meade.
The Kiowa County Mavericks, who finished their regular season on Monday night with a rousing win over the Bucklin Red Aces, will face the Elkhart Wildcats in the opening round of the tourney on Tuesday Feb. 28.
The Wildcats will finish their regular season on Friday against Wichita County. They have a 9-10 overall with a 2-6 division record. Elkhart has averaged almost 50 points per game this season on 898 total season points. Alex Gomez, #12 (5’11”) has been their biggest contributor this season posting 11.3 points per, shooting .387 percent from the field with strong defensive rebound numbers.
With a win over Elkhart, the Mavs would most likely face the Meade Buffalos in the second round on Friday March 2. The Buffalos will try to wrap-up their perfect season on Friday with win number 20 vs. Syracuse.
The Lady Mavs have drawn the number 6 seed in the tournament and will face the Sublette Larks in the opening round at Meade on Monday Feb. 27.
The Larks are 10-9 overall with a 4-4 league record. The Larks finished their regular season on Tuesday with a 56-49 win over the Moscow Wildcats thanks in large part to #3 Riley Matterson and #55 Daryan Whaler. Matterson a 5’5” junior, leads the team in points per game (14.3) averaging almost five rebounds per game and shooting .509 percent from the field.
Whaler, a 6’3” senior, is their go-to in the paint averaging almost 14 points and 10 rebounds per game and shot .554 percent on the season.
With a win, the Lady Mavs would face either Kinsley (11-9) or Wichita Co. (6-13) on the second round on Thursday March 1.
