  • I am sure you have been told to always shop with a list.  There is a good reason to have your list ready.  It can save you $500 to $1,000 or more annually.  If you make your list correspond to your local store’s layout it will reduce your time going up and down the aisle to find what you are looking for.
Market watchers estimate that grocery shoppers spend about $2.17 per minute during the first 30 minutes of a shopping trip.  After that the cost goes up to $2.67 a minute.  So it will save you money the faster you can find your items and get out of the store.
Shopping less frequently can save money.  Be careful about shopping loss leaders or store specials.  If you won’t use the product don’t buy it just because it is on sale.
Do coupons always offer as savings?  No all the time.  Store brands or generic labels usually will be cheaper than national brands plus your coupon. Most generic or store brands are produced in the same facility as the national brand, but packaged differently.
Using your cooking skills can save you money.  Grilling or stir frying use more costly cuts of meat.  If you use your slow cooker or oven you can use the less expensive cuts.
Be sure to check the “Use by” or “Best by" dates.  This can help reduce waste and hold down the cost of food.
Shop less often and go early in the day or after supper when stores are less crowded.  Usually the most expensive items will be placed in easy reach and lower priced on upper or lower shelves.
Cook once and eat twice.  Prepare more than enough for one meal and freeze the extra for those days you are in a rush and don’t have time to cook.
