  • During the holiday season, Thanksgiving through New Years, there seems to be a greater focus on reaching out to those around us. There are a couple of ways this happened locally.
The first is Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse. Opportunities for spreading the love of Christ world-wide come about when a shoe box is filled with gifts for a child. These boxes are collected locally (534 in 2011), packed into cartons and transported to a collection center (Dodge City for this area) where they are loaded onto a semi and taken to a processing center where the story of Jesus is added in the language of the area to which they will be shipped. One box may impact one child, a whole family, forty orphans…What a simple way to be involved in world-wide missions!
A second opportunity to show Christ’s love is through the Kiowa county Angel Tree, a ministry of the Kiowa County Ministerial Alliance. Through this, children infants through high school receive Christmas gifts. Parents fill out an application then each child is assigned a number which is put on a paper angel along with sizes and greatest needs. These angels are placed in the Kiowa County banks and are then adopted by individuals or groups. In 2011 there were 82 angels up for adoption. No “angel” will be left without gifts. A simple way to be involved in local missions!
If sharing Christ’s love so generously can be shown during the holiday season, why not every day? Smile, open the door for someone, send a card or note to someone God places on your mind, drop some food off at the food bank, volunteer at the Care N Share, help a single parent with a need, help an elderly person with yard work or transportation, volunteer as a scout leader…The possibilities are as numerous as your creativity allows.
Remember James 2:17-18 which states “…faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.” Go and touch your world for Christ.
